About this treatment

Combine a light-sensitive solution with targeted light.

Photodynamic therapy begins with a topical light-sensitive solution, which is then activated by a specific light source. Laser Aesthetics uses PDT for concerns such as active acne, sun-damaged skin and selected precancerous lesions; a consultation is important because the preparation, recovery and light precautions need to be understood before treatment.

PDT pairs a topical light-sensitive solution with a specific activating light. The solution is allowed to absorb before light is applied, helping target selected abnormal cells, sebaceous glands and acne-related bacteria.

Laser Aesthetics discusses PDT for active acne, sun-damaged skin and selected precancerous lesions. Temporary redness, peeling and flaking can follow, and careful light avoidance is an important part of recovery.

Preparation and light precautions matter.

The topical solution needs time to absorb before it is activated. The clinician chooses the treatment area, application and light source according to the concern being treated and your skin's ability to tolerate recovery.

Because the treated skin remains light-sensitive after activation, aftercare is part of the treatment itself. You need to understand indoor and outdoor light precautions, gentle skin care and what level of redness or peeling to expect before you book.

Plan for both the medicine and the light.

Photodynamic therapy combines a photosensitizing agent with a light treatment. The medicine, the condition being treated and the timing of the light exposure all matter. Ask the clinic to explain the exact protocol proposed for your skin rather than following generic blue-light advice.

Plan the day around the preparation and aftercare you are given. Light sensitivity after treatment can affect travel, outdoor activities and work. Tell us about your schedule before booking so you can understand the practical requirements as well as the intended benefit.

Common questions

How is PDT different from light therapy alone?

Photodynamic therapy adds a photosensitizing topical medication before light activation; light therapy alone does not include that medication step. The combination changes both the treatment effect and precautions. Ask which concern is being treated and what product and light source are proposed, so you understand your actual plan rather than assuming every appointment described as light therapy involves the same process.

Which concerns can PDT address?

The clinic discusses PDT for selected acne concerns, sun damage and certain precancerous lesions after appropriate assessment. These are distinct clinical reasons for treatment and should not be grouped as a general facial. If a lesion is changing or has not been diagnosed, arrange assessment first and ask who will determine what it is before considering a cosmetic treatment.

What should I expect after treatment?

Redness, warmth, peeling and sensitivity can follow PDT. The medication can leave skin sensitive to light after the visit, so recovery planning includes how you travel home and avoid exposure afterward. Ask for instructions specific to the product and area used, including which symptoms require contact and when ordinary skincare can resume; do not borrow a timetable from another person's treatment.

How is suitability decided?

Assessment considers the diagnosis, skin history, medicines, light sensitivity and ability to follow recovery instructions. Your practical circumstances matter too: discuss outdoor work, commuting and events before choosing a date. A treatment can be clinically relevant but poorly timed, so ask whether another date or approach would be more appropriate for the situation you have described.

Why is light avoidance important after PDT?

Light can continue to activate the photosensitizing medication and intensify a skin reaction after treatment. Sunscreen alone should not be assumed to replace the prescribed light-avoidance measures. Ask which light sources, clothing precautions and time period apply to the exact product used, and plan those arrangements before your appointment so you are not trying to organize them on the way home.

What should I tell the clinic before PDT?

Tell us about prescriptions, supplements, active skincare, light-sensitive conditions and previous reactions, as well as pregnancy or breastfeeding. Mention any difficulty following the proposed light precautions at home or work. Bring medication names and your questions to the consultation; identifying a practical problem early is more useful than agreeing to a recovery plan that you cannot realistically follow.
